Presented by Fraser High School in Macomb County

-Blended and Hybrid are synonyms for Fraser

Hybrid
  • Courses are combination of Face to Face time and Online
Virtual
  • All online

They focused all on Hybrid

Objectives:
  • Provide students with alternative learning options
  • Challenge teaching staff to develop new ways of delivering instruction

FHS chose to create their own courses vs. purchasing courses

Started by training 4 teachers in the hybrid teaching model
For the pilot the teachers who had the training, implemented this with students in 1st hours and end of the class and the students were not given a choice. Met with parents, and of them only 3 asked to have their students moved to another class.

3 year plan

    • Average of 25 students per course per semester
      • 1175

Data
  • Showed some data that indicates there is no evidence that grades are negatively impacted by online courses as predicted by some people

Union Considerations
  • During planning included the following people to discuss
    • 4 pilot teachers
    • online learning coordinator
    • High School Principal
    • Union President -
  • All parties agreed on the format for our program
    • No "canned" programs
    • Fraser teachers teaching Fraser curriculum
  • Hybrid courses use the same language as regular courses

Set-up of hybrid is up to the teacher
  • face-to-face is determined by teacher, example science teacher does content online and only face to face on labs
  • students who are struggling, can come in to classroom
How do you handle the logistics
  • open-campus permission form
  • Have to meet criteria (behavioral)to get permission slip
  • Have to meet classroom criteria - 70% to maintain open-campus rights
  • If they don't want to leave, they have about 60 spots in the media center and the media specialist observes them. If the teacher requires that they stay because of grades then teacher is required to be with them, either in the media center or takes them to the classroom

Main costs for Fraser for implementation
  • PD for teachers
  • Class size of 25

Online days - Teachers are available to students at that time -- like office hours
Goal - have every teacher doing something with blended (minimally blackboard assignments)

Online Learning Coordinator - teaches 1 less block then the rest of the teachers

"If you don't do something with virtual learning in your school, you will lose these students dramatically in the next 3-5 years" - Fraser Principal quote

Hope is that they will be able to get rid of e2020 eventually and have all credit recovery classes also taught by teachers
